Holidays in Vorarlberg
Mediterranean Flair on the Lakeshore and Traditional Mountain Valleys
Vorarlberg is rich in tradition. They take pride in historic customs, the locals in Austria’s westernmost province. It stretches from Bregenz, the port city on the shores of Lake Constance that features the world-famous floating stage, to the breathtaking mountain scenery of the massif “Arlberg” in the east and the Silvretta group in the south. You can still follow in the Walser’s footsteps - the people who have settled communities here, hundreds of years ago. The region’s traditional architecture and cuisine still bear their imprint. Marvel at dark-coloured log houses and savour typical dishes such as “Gerstensuppe” (barley soup) or “Riebel” (fried corn pudding).

Characteristics of Vorarlberg
Being deeply rooted in nature - in Vorarlberg, that’s an integral part of the people’s identity. A simple, down-to-earth lifestyle, authentic values and historic customs belong to daily life like in no other province in Austria. The use of locally grown products is characteristic for the traditional cuisine in Vorarlberg. Typical culinary treats on the menu: “Krutspätzle” (a type of fresh pasta with cabbage), “Käsdönnala” (a savoury cake made of pizza dough topped with grated cheese and onions) or “Flädlesuppe” (thinly sliced pancakes in broth). Though the dishes are hard to pronounce for foreigners, they are unbelievably tasty!
Nature and Wildlife
Mit Bus & Bahn In die Berge
You can tell by the gnaw marks: there’s a beaver around. Alpine ibex also call Vorarlberg their home. The large forests attract them. If you’re lucky, you can even watch them when they’re grazing. For a long time, this species was on the brink of extinction. But now, nature comes back. That doesn’t come as a surprise since this province is blessed with an unequalled diversity of natural habitats and ecosystems. Woods with beech, fir and spruce trees alternate with moorlands and green meadows. The scenery of the Alps is the most picturesque backdrop. Natural wonders bursting with colours - right on your doorstep.
