Would you like to climb Lower Austria’s highest mountain, the Schneeberg? The prominent 2,000m peak is not only great to look at. Its springs are the source of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline which supplies the metropolis with pure drinking water. Fancy an effortless climb up to the top? Hop on the nostalgic rack railway, the “salamander”.
Highlight: Stop by the station halfway between the valley floor and the summit and try some of the delicious “Schneebergbuchteln”, sweet rolls made of yeast dough filled with jam. Once you’re on top, you can hike to several mountain cabins or set out on a demanding multi-day tour. But the best thing is staying in one of the family farms nearby between your hikes. Here, you can rest your weary legs at the end of an exciting day in the great outdoors. Perhaps, you’ll dream of your next summit in the bed made of Austrian stone pine?

With a vast network of 260km of cycle routes, Lower Austria is a great place for long-distance cycling tours. In other words: 138 tours that are 100+km in length are waiting for you. That’s quite a distance! But don’t feel rushed - there are many farms to stay in along the way. Have a rest, enjoy a hearty, healthy breakfast on the farm and recharge your batteries for the day ahead. It’s not a matter of fitness, but of planning! For those who love cycling, there’s nothing better than pedalling through the countryside several days in a row.

Every step takes you closer to finding inner peace. Multi-day hikes in nature combine meditation and exercise, making for replenishing activity holidays that satisfy body, mind, and spirit. A network of long-distance hiking trails crisscrosses every region in Lower Austria. From the Wachau World Heritage Trail to the spiritual “trail of life” (“Lebensweg”) in the southern part of the Waldviertel region. From traversing the arc of the Vienna Alps to tackling a demanding tour in the alpine terrain of the Mostviertel region. Just set out and find yourself again. Where there’s water, there’s wetlands. The Danube flows through the centre of Lower Austria. With its many tributaries and marshes, the province resembles the Shire. With an area of 9,600ha, the Donau-Auen National Park is known for its unique flora and fauna. Absolutely worth a visit! If you’re lucky, you might spot red deer in the wild. Count the trees that have been chewed down as you look for tracks and signs of the beavers. Did you know that this national park is home to the white-tailed eagle? In the Thayatal National Park, you can uncover the wilderness during a guided tour.
Walking through the moorlands is fascinating too. There’s a great, family-friendly loop trail through the “Heidenreichsteiner Moor” in the northern part of the Waldviertel region.
For Stone Rockers & Wildlife Watchers
In Austria’s nature parks, you’ll find some of the most outstanding landscapes. If you’re lucky and patient, you might be able to watch some wildlife such as wild boar and fallow deer in the nature park “Sparbach”. The vantage point “Skywalk” in the nature park “Hohe Wand” comes with a spectacular view. Get inspired by the peculiarities of nature in the northern part of the Waldviertel region. The strange and intriguing rock formations that are scattered across the heath landscape “Blockheide” are the result of weathering. Why are they called “devil’s bed” or “goblin”? Listen to the stories and see if you can rock one of these giant boulders!
