“Ship ahoy!” Would you like to cruise the Danube in the city harbour? Cyclists will love the Danube Cycle Path, one of Europe’s most popular routes. Goldwork Embroidery and Four-Sided Farmyards
Local Customs & Traditions
Old traditions are also kept alive in Upper Austria’s capital city. Hats decorated with delicate goldwork embroidery (“Goldhauben”) are the most precious part of the traditional Upper Austrian festive costumes. The technique has been preserved for centuries and is also inscribed in the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Take a stroll through the romantic Christmas markets in Linz or the vibrant annual fair “Urfahraner Jahrmarkt”. In summer, you can watch oversized straw dolls being burnt on bonfires to celebrate summer solstice (“Peterfeuer”).
The majestic farmhouses called “Vierkanthof” give evidence of the agricultural significance of this region. The large, four-sided buildings enclose a farmyard that can only be accessed via one gate. The size of these buildings is unique in Upper Austria. Most of the farms here grow crops and grain. The “garden of Linz” is located on the outskirts of the city. The farms surrounding the town of Eferding are the province’s major vegetable producers. Asparagus, potatoes, cabbage and much more grows on the fertile land. Let’s taste what the region has on offer in one of the local restaurants!
