Lake Neusiedl
A Place of Outstanding Natural Beauty
You can tell by the region’s name: The most characteristic feature in northern Burgenland is Lake Neusiedl, the largest steppe lake in Central Europe. It has a strong influence on the local climate, viticulture, flora and fauna as well as on the people living here.
Immersive Experiences in Nature
THE NATIONAL PARK AT LAKE NEUSIEDL
It’s all about the lake! That doesn’t only mean that this region is ideal for boat tours, swimming and surfing. It’s also an area of outstanding natural beauty. No matter where you go, in Burgenland, Lake Neusiedl is always close. The Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park is a paradise for nature lovers! Covering a vast area in Austria and Hungary, it protects a region of rich biodiversity with a unique flora and fauna. Extensive reed beds on the lakeshore are a safe habitat and breeding ground for plants and wildlife. A variety of Alpine, Pannonian, Asian, Mediterranean and northern influences provides the national park with a biodiversity that is almost ingenious. Especially birds love it here! Great white egrets and bustards breed in the national park. It’s also a stopover site for more than 100 migratory birds. Calling all ornithologists! There’s a lot to see and photograph here. If you haven’t been interested in birds already, you will be after you’ve visited this national park. We recommend a guided tour with an experienced ranger who can show you the best spots for birdwatchers and photographers. Ask your guides what long-eared owls do during the day and why geese fly in a V!
Wine, Nature and Culture
A PERFECT HARMONY
The northern part of Burgenland is not only home to a fascinating natural landscape around Lake Neusiedl and the Rosalia Mountains, but also to friendly winegrowers welcoming you to a vineyard stay. The provincial capital Eisenstadt is not far. The cultural amenities there are well worth a visit.
The region surrounding Lake Neusiedl is well known among culture enthusiasts. Every year, the outdoor operetta festival “Seefestspiele Mörbisch” draws 150,000 visitors to the shores of Lake Neusiedl. The opera festival in St. Margarethen is set in an impressive location: a quarry, which was in use in Roman times already, provides the natural stage. We recommend stopping by one of the many traditional wine taverns and having a hearty snack with a glass of wine before the cultural programme starts.
