Which Way to Go?
EXPLORE AUSTRIA’S SOUTH IN YOUR HIKING BOOTS
The north-western part of the province is home to Austria’s highest mountain, “Großglockner”, which is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park Region. An extensive network of footpaths and leisurely hiking trails awaits you in Bad Kleinkirchheim. The area is also home to rare medicinal plant species such as Alpine valerian. Follow the Trail of Peace in the Carnic Alps, known in German as “Karnischer Höhenweg”. Enjoy a spectacular panorama from this high-altitude route along the Italian/Austrian border. On a clear day, you can even see the Adriatic Sea! The picturesque countryside walks near Lake Presseggersee are great for families - such as the “Aqua Trail” close to Nassfeld. Would you like to immerse yourself in a perfectly idyllic setting? Set out on a hike in the Lesachtal valley, Europe’s most natural valley. The nature park “Weissensee” surrounding Lake Weissensee is the perfect spot for outdoor activities.
The Nockberge Biosphere Reserve never fails to surprise its visitors, for example with the longest alpine coaster “Nocky Flitzer” located on the mountain pass “Turrach” or an untouched mountain landscape on the pass “Hochrindl” in the Gurktal Alps. Families will have a fun-filled good time visiting “Heidi-Alm”, a theme park on the mountain “Falkert” featuring more than 100 scenes from Spyri’s novel and television series “Heidi”. Are you seeking greener pastures far from home? You’ll find them on the “Alpe-Adria Trail”. This unique, long-distance hiking trail of 750 kilometres in length connects Carinthia, Slovenia and Italy further in the south where it meets the Adriatic Sea. The motto is: take it easy and enjoy life to the fullest.
Find inner peace, broaden your horizon and satisfy your thirst for freedom on one of the eight recently designed Slow Trails. You’ll pass shimmering lakes, feel the sun caressing your skin and the soft forest floor beneath your feet. Every step takes you one step closer to restoring your inner balance.
Austria’s South: A Paradise for Cyclists
WALKING SPEED IS TOO SLOW? TAKE YOUR BIKE OUT, THEN!
In Carinthia, the cycling season starts in spring already. There are plenty of opportunities for leisurely rides for the whole family. Cycle routes such as the long-distance path along the Drava river (“Drauradweg”) which has been awarded 5 stars by the German Cyclist’s Association (ADFC), the “Five Lake Route” or the “Alpe-Adria Cycle Path” guarantee unforgettable experiences. The new Carinthian Lake Loop (“Große Kärnten Seen Schleife”) is a 340-kilometre multi-day tour for recreational cyclists. Each stage takes you past lakes and mountains that differ in size and altitude but have one thing in common: they are picturesque and awe-inspiring.
On the way, our specialised hosts invite you to take a break. Thanks to the cross-regional electric bike scheme “Kärnten rent e-bike” with more than 1,000 rental bikes and charging stations, your days will be full of energy! Road cyclists will find everything their heart desires such as Austria’s highest mountain pass, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (“Großglockner Hochalpenstraße”).
Mountain bikers can look forward to more than 3,000 kilometres of marked cycle paths, flow trails and singletracks. Since summer 2019, Bad Kleinkirchheim boasts the world’s longest flow trail. Starting at 1,800 metres above sea level on the mountain “Kaiserburg”, you can glide all the way down to the base station. 15 kilometres of pure fun!

CARINTHIA: A SEA OF LAKES
Water on every corner - that’s Carinthia. Hiking in remote bays, stand-up paddleboarding, drifting through pristine waters on a raft or a classic boat trip - the lakes in Austria’s south boast a seemingly endless list of activities. The Drava (German: “Drau”), Carinthia’s longest and largest river, flows eastwards, winding through the province like a green ribbon. A paddling path takes you along the river in more than ten stages varying from easy to difficult. Eight paddling centres offer exciting paddling experiences on site.
So Close to Moments of Joy
PLAYGROUND “MOTHER EARTH”
No matter which activity you choose, it’s all about an immersive experience in nature that you share with your travel companions. Take a walk with llamas, zip line through the forest on a canopy tour, go on a treasure hunt, explore the lake in a rowing boat, climb a summit with your via ferrata equipment or discover the nearest creek behind the barn. During a farm holiday, it’s not an iPad or the brand new PlayStation that makes kids’ eyes sparkle with joy. It’s simply the playground called “Mother Earth”.
