Mostviertel Region
From the Danube to the Alps
The mountains and hills in the Mostviertel region are perfect for cycle tours and hikes in summer or for alpine and cross-country skiing in winter. Peek over a blacksmith’s shoulder when he’s forging a scythe on the Iron Road (“Eisenstraße”). Marvel at the springtime beauty when thousands of pear trees are in full bloom and aromas of sweet perfumes seep through the air. Taste fruity cider, excellent wine and fine fruit spirit in one of the traditional cider taverns. Those with a sweet tooth will love the delectable desserts made with locally grown fruit such as perry pears and Cornelian cherries. Here, you’ll find “real” family farms for your holiday!
Mild & Wild
The Mostviertel region in the south-west of Lower Austria - a region of contrasting landscapes. As you go south, the tranquil landscape and fertile land south of the Danube river transitions to a dramatic and yet romantic mountainous scenery. Start an exciting expedition, embark on a mountain adventure or spend a great holiday with your family.
The lowest point in Lower Austria is the village Ardagger near the Danube river (246m), whereas the highest point is the peak of the mountain Ötscher (1,893m) - a difference of 1,650m! The most iconic landmark in the Mostviertel region is the mountain Ötscher. Other prominent mountain peaks: Dürrenstein (1,878m), Hochkar (1,808m), Göller (1,766m) and Gippel (1,669m).
The weather in the Mostviertel region is largely determined by Pannonian and Atlantic climatic influences. Thanks to the mild climate, the rolling farmland near the Danube river is ideal for growing fruit, grapevines and vegetables. Summers are refreshingly cool in the mountainous areas. In winter, snow cover is surprisingly reliable.

Summer in the Mostviertel Region
In summer, the alpine pastures, mountain cabins and summits of the Ybbstal Alps as well as the gorges and canyons in the nature park “Ötscher-Tormäuer” are fantastic destinations for a hike. Cyclists will have a great time on the cycle routes “Ybbstalradweg” along the river Ybbs and “Traisental-Radweg” in the Traisental valley. Fancy a refreshment? Take a dip in the cool waters of Lake Erlaufsee or swim in the picturesque Lake Lunzer See.
Mostviertel Region - Explore the Diversity
In the Mostviertel region, the highlights throughout the year are as diverse as the region itself.
Great destinations for a winter or skiing holiday: the Ybbstal Alps next to the Iron Road (“Eisenstraße”) including the prominent mountains Hochkar and Ötscher as well as the valleys Traisental and Gölsental with the ski resorts “Gemeindealpe Mitterbach” and “Annaberger Lifte”. In April, the pear trees along the Cider Road (“Moststraße”) are in full bloom. What a beautiful sight!
The Mostviertel Region Tastes Like This
The “star” of all the delicacies that the Mostviertel region is famous for certainly is cider. Pear cider, to be more precise. Thanks to the creativity of ingenious locals, this fine drink is now making a comeback. Drinking pear cider is unique in Europe since apple cider is far more common. The Mostviertel region produces mainly single-variety pear ciders. And they have a surprisingly complex, delicate flavour: A sip might be mild and fruity, crisp and fresh or rich and tangy.
Let’s not forget to mention the other local delicacies from the Mostviertel region: wine from the Traisental valley, sheep milk cheese, trout from the Ybbstal valley, Cornelian cherries from the Pielachtal valley and venison from the Prealps near Lilienfeld.
