Winter Holidays in the Hohe Tauern National Park Region
A HIDDEN GEM ON THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF THE ALPS
The mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park region with majestic 3,000m+ peaks are a spectacular backdrop for the arguably most delightful winter activity: alpine skiing. Far away from the hustle and bustle, this is a place to slow down and soak up the beauty of the scenery as you slide down the slopes.
You can also explore the breathtaking mountains in a different way, relying on your own strength only. Grab your ski touring skis, snowshoes or cross-country skis and discover the backcountry around Mallnitz or at the head of the Mölltal valley.
Alpine huts, cabins and mountain restaurants invite you to stop by. Enjoy home-made apple strudel with vanilla sauce, a snack platter with bacon, sausage and locally sourced cheese or the most iconic dish in Carinthia, “Kärntner Kasnudeln”. At an altitude of roughly 3,000m, the food tastes even more delicious! A taxi sled takes you back down to the valley floor in no time.
Party time? Not here. In the evening, it’s time to cosy up in a mountain cabin or a traditional farm in Carinthia. What a peaceful end of the day!
A Different Kind of Play
CLOSER TO NATURE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE
The sound of birds chirping echoes through the woods, roe deer is grazing on the fresh grass, a group of young Alpine ibex can be observed in the distance. Have you ever been wildlife watching from a raised hide? The rangers in the national park are happy to keep you company on your way through this area of outstanding natural beauty on the southern side of the Alps. Let them show you the most beautiful spots!
Have you ever walked barefoot through a mountain stream, looking for fossils embedded in rocks? Have you ever put on your rubber boots and panned for gold in a creek? Have you ever taken a close look at an ant hill through a magnifying glass? The Hohe Tauern National Park is a natural playground with endless opportunities for outdoor play.
From local cable cars to walks past ravines, gorges and waterfalls and guided tours with a national park ranger - countless activities are included in the guest card “Nationalpark-Kärnten Card”. Guests get it for free for the length of their stay in a partner accommodation.
