Hiking & Climbing
The Hochsteiermark region is a paradise for hikers and climbers. Awe-inspiring mountains and lush alpine pastures are characteristic of the region between Mariazell and Peter Rosegger’s “Home in the Forest”.
The mountain Hochschwab (2,277m) in the heart of the region is an excellent hiking ground. And it’s home to some of the largest chamois populations in Europe. Beautiful hiking trails criss-cross the Eisenerz and Fischbach Alps and wind their way up the mountains Hohe Veitsch, Schneealpe and Rax.

Cycle Routes
Family-friendly cycle paths along the rivers on the valley floor or demanding climbs on your mountain bike - there’s a route for every cyclist here. Lovely cycle paths and mountain biking trails suitable for all levels of ability criss-cross the Hochsteiermark region.
Once on top, mountain bikers and e-bikers will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. A ride on an e-bike is easy on the muscles.
Winter in the Hochsteiermark Region
The Hochsteiermark region provides the ideal conditions for a winter holiday with the whole family.
Delightful family-friendly pistes and slopes for mogul skiing - beginners and advanced skiers will find everything they’re looking for in the ski resorts. Cross-country skiers can look forward to 200km of tracks and trails.

What to Do Here
One of Styria’s most famous writers, Peter Rosegger, grew up in the Hochsteiermark region. In the village of Alpl, you can visit Rosegger’s birthplace and his school in the forest. Get to know what life was like in former times.
Set in the heart of the picturesque village of Mariazell, the Mariazell Basilica is worth a visit. It’s one of Austria’s most popular places of pilgrimage. Stop by the gingerbread factory “Pirker” and see how this sweet treat is produced. Of course, you’re allowed to try this famous culinary delight. The mountain Mariazeller Bürgeralpe right next to the village is a great place to go hiking in summer or tobogganing and skiing in winter.
Lake Grüner See in Tragöß was voted “Most Beautiful Place in Austria” in a TV show in 2014. It’s worth a visit, especially during the spring runoff. As the snow on the surrounding mountains melts, the lake fills up and the bridges and trees are submerged. Thanks to the lush landscape, the waters boast a striking emerald green shade.
- Ausseerland - Salzkammergut
Crystal-clear waters, tranquil mountain lakes, karstic peaks and of course the daffodils epitomise the Ausseerland in the Salzkammergut region, a particularly beautiful corner of Styria.
