Styria is a paradise for cross-country skiers. Cross-country skiing is extremely healthy, that’s an undisputed fact. At the same time, moving smoothly and gracefully across a winter landscape is a fantastic immersion in nature. In Ramsau am Dachstein, cross-country skiers will find 220 km of tracks accessible to a broad range of abilities. The Dachstein glacier boasts the world’s longest cross-country ski trail on a glacier.
An especially reliable snow cover is characteristic for the destination “Eisenerzer Ramsau”. That’s one of the reasons why the area is home to a training centre for Nordic skiing which is also used by professionals.
Well-groomed cross-country ski trails can also be found in St. Jakob im Walde, high up on Tauplitzalm, on the valley floors of the Ausseerland region (the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut region) and around the town of Murau (170 km of tracks).
Destinations that are subject to quality controls and meet certain criteria are awarded a seal of quality called “Steirisches Loipengütesiegel”. These places are a selection of the best destinations for cross-country skiers.

Tobogganing and sledging is great fun too. In a lot of villages, you can speed down the hill on a special toboggan run. After the fun-filled descent, you need to pull your toboggan uphill or, in some cases, there’s even a lift or a shuttle service.
