Food & Drinks
The Vulkanland & Spa region in Styria is the right place for food lovers. Good food and drinks are among the top priorities here. The region calls itself “Austria’s finest deli”. For a good reason! The local cuisine is based on the use of high-quality ingredients that are sourced from the surrounding farms.
It’s worth taking a look behind the scenes. A lot of producers open their doors for you and let you peek over their shoulders to see where the local delicacies come from. Excellent vinegar, sweet honey, hearty ham and bacon, crisp apples, hot horseradish, delicious cheese, dark pumpkin seed oil, fine chocolate ... There’s a lot more to add. The list of culinary delights is seemingly endless.
Last but not least: wine. Vineyards cover the hillsides of extinct volcanoes. The grapes thrive in this almost Mediterranean climate. The region primarily grows white varieties that are known for their fine taste and fruity notes. There’s hardly a better place to taste them than one of the countless wine taverns called “Buschenschänken” here. Enjoy a hearty snack platter with it!
Activity Holidays

- Weekly jogging sessions
- Diverse golf course nestled in the undulating hills

- Canoeing on the rivers - look at the scenery from a new perspective
- Afterwards, it’s time to allow your muscles to relax in the warm thermal waters.
What to Do Here
A large number castles and fortresses dominate the landscape. Perched above the valley floor, these iconic features are scattered across the region. For centuries, this part of the country was on the border to other realms. The castles and fortresses were built over the centuries to protect and to control the land and the roads. Over time, the sites were fortified. The monuments stand as a reminder of the region’s turbulent past. They are open to visitors. In some of them, you can even stay overnight. Riegersburg Castle is the most famous of all. It stands proudly on top of an impressive crag.
There are also a lot of small museums. The different exhibitions provide an insight into a wide variety of topics. Gsellmann’s “World Machine” is widely known. It makes ringing, whistling and jingling sounds. What’s the purpose? It has none. Perhaps, that’s the most beautiful thing about it. Would you like to have a look at the largest fire (station) truck in Bairisch-Kölldorf? The local fire station is actually an oversized truck.
Another delightful way to explore the region: walk on a pilgrimage route to the places of pilgrimage and churches in the region.
