Summer in the Ausseerland Region
In summer, the lakes in the Ausseerland region are inviting places to relax and have a swim. Walk or cycle on the shores or glide over the lake in a boat or a “Plätte”, a traditional wooden rowing boat.
Lake Altausseer See is a natural gem at the foot of the mountain Loser. Styria’s largest lake, Lake Grundlsee (5km²), is set in an area that has remained in its natural condition. Surrounded by steep cliffs and clouded in secrecy, you’ll find the legendary Lake Toplitzsee.
Lake Ödensee is a place of outstanding natural beauty amidst alpine moorlands. The karst spring “Strummern” is nearby. It’s worth a visit, especially during the spring runoff. Wild, romantic and picturesque - that’s the Salza Reservoir set between the mountains Grimming and Kemetgebirge.
Winter in the Ausseerland Region
In the Ausseerland region, the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut region, you’re sure to spend an indulgent winter holiday. Have fun on the pistes of the ski resorts “Tauplitz”, “Loser” and “Zlaim”.
State-of-the-art chair lifts take you up the mountain Loser with its pistes, fun park and children’s area. Off-piste skiing in deep, untouched snow is a delight beyond comparison for the fit and outdoorsy. A special highlight: In winter, the scenic drive up the mountain is turned into Austria’s longest ski run for families. Enjoy 9km of perfectly groomed piste!
“Tauplitz” is among the ski resorts with the most reliable snow cover in Austria. It boasts 42km of pistes. There’s something for every fancy: leisurely ski runs, demanding descents and off-piste skiing in deep, untouched snow.
The ski resort “Zlaim” is ideal for beginners. Here, you can have fun in the snow until 8pm. Cross-country skiers can look forward to 230km of tracks and trails. Move smoothly and gracefully across a winter landscape. Enjoy this peaceful winter activity to the fullest.

Local Customs & Traditions
For the locals in the Ausseerland region, customs and traditions are an important part of everyday life. Here, guests will not see traditions that are merely upheld for show. A few examples: carnival (since 2016, the traditional “Ausseer Fasching” is even inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity), an annual play featuring Saint Nicholas in Bad Mitterndorf, Saint Nicholas and his companions, the Krampus and the Habergeiß in other villages and the narcissus festival in spring. There’s so much to do and see here. You’ll be amazed!
