White Water Fun
Apart from the majestic, rugged summits of the Northern Limestone Alps, the wild rivers Enns and Salza are the most prominent features of the Gesäuse National Park region. Gesäuse ... Did you know that the region derives its name from sound of water rushing and roaring over ledges and boulders? The river Enns has forced its way through the mountain ridge.
Interested in a walk on the wild side? Let’s get your wild water adventure started! Rafting or canyoning in pristine nature is a thrill like no other.
What to Do Here
Visit the world’s largest monastic library in Admont Abbey, a Benedictine monastery which dates back almost 1,000 years. The library is a remarkable piece of art and an outstanding example of European late Baroque architecture. It also showcases other art forms of this period. Absolutely worth a visit!
After hiking, mountaineering and water sports, you should also take a moment to see the mountaineers’ cemetery in Johnsbach. It’s the largest of its kind in Austria. All those who have lost their lives during a mountaineering or climbing tour rest in peace here.
Winter in the Gesäuse National Park
In winter, life seems to calm down in the Gesäuse National Park region. The largest ski resort here is called “Kaiserau” and features more than 2km of pistes. Families with kids will find the ideal conditions in small ski resorts or at lifts in the village centres.
Do you love ski touring and walking in a winter wonderland? Then, this is the perfect destination for you. The well-signposted ski touring trails through the national park respect the local wildlife. The snowshoeing trails in the Johnsbachtal valley or from the mountain Kaiserau to the mountain cabin “Oberst-Klinke-Hütte” will make every nature lover’s heart sing.
