Southern & Western Styria
Fancy a spot of vineyard wine tasting? The region is famous for the South Styrian Wine Road, where you can sample and buy the produce as you travel. The vineyards hug the steep slopes and are clearly quite difficult to harvest.
Autumn is the time of wine festivals, chestnuts and new cider. All the taverns selling the fresh produce are open during this period, and visitors are warmly invited to step in. Have you heard of the Schilcher? It is produced from the grapes of the Blue Wildbacher vines. Its home – and that of the legendary Lipizzan breed of horses – is West Styria.
