Special Places in the Salzkammergut Region
Natural Beaches and Islands in the Lake
Families will love the lakes Mondsee and Irrsee, the warmest water bodies in the region. Larger lakes such as Attersee and Traunsee need a bit more time to get warmer. But they offer just as many fun activities in the water! Lake Wolfgangsee is perfect if you’re looking for natural beaches, secluded spots for sunbathing and some shade. The legendary Lake Hallstättersee is at the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Hallstatt-Dachstein” that also includes the villages of Bad Goisern, Obertraun and Hallstatt. A very special place to take a swim: the small island ”Badeinsel Hallstatt” that’s only a 10 minutes’ walk from the village centre.

It’s surrounded by mountains and its water of an emerald colour is safe to drink. A picture-perfect scenery! In summer, this is one of Upper Austria’s warmest lakes. Plus, the lakeside restaurant “Seebauer” serves delicious meals with organic ingredients. Most of them are produced on site since the family also runs an organic farm and processes its own meat.
Five favourites in the Kalkalpen National Park region:
- Swimming pond in Steyrling
- Small lake in Edlbach
- Natural lake Elisabethsee
- Reservoir in Klaus
- Mountain lake Gleinkersee in Roßleithen
