The Danube Cycle Path
A Leisurely Ride for Families and Food Lovers
“Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride!” John F Kennedy - Cycling the Danube is the perfect way to arrive at the farm of your choice on two wheels. The Danube Cycle Path (“Donauradweg”) is one of the most popular long-distance cycle routes in Europe. Choose your favourite stages! Start in Passau, the “city on three rivers”, ride across Upper Austria, stop in the city of Linz and continue to Lower Austria. From the “land of cider” to the “land of wine”! Along the way, there are enough family farms with welcoming hosts. Here, you can recharge your batteries with a delicious snack or spend a night or two in a comfy bed. We all want to start the day without sore muscles, don’t we?
Culinary Treats Right at the Danube Cycle Path
Thirsty? Hungry? Tired? All of it? The farm Radlerbauernhof Moser is located directly at the Danube Cycle Path, between Linz and Grein. The popular snack bar and cider tavern is the ideal stop for cyclists. Home-made ice cream from their own fruit, wine (yes, really) or a glass of award-winning cider - these delicacies will help you regain your strength. The Moser family is well known for the culinary treats they produce on their farm: juice, fruit spirit, cider, bread and meat.
It's a place to stay a little bit longer. Stroll through the vineyards and sit down for a break in the traditional orchard that’s bursting with colour. Peek over the farmers’ shoulders to see how precious food is produced on the farm. Here, you really know where it comes from.
Cycle along Majestic Rivers
Inn - Enns - Steyr
Cycling along the river Inn (“Innradweg”) in the Innviertel-Hausruckwald region, you travel along the state border between Upper Austria and Bavaria (Germany) until you reach the German city of Passau. It is situated on the confluence of the three rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz. Marvel at places of outstanding natural beauty along the way: lush riparian forests, moorland lakes and the hill ranges of the Prealps. Historic towns such as Braunau, Burghausen or Schärding are inviting you to take a rest. Boost your energy levels with local delicacies such as bacon dumplings (“Speckknödel”) and some refreshing beer from one of the many private and craft breweries.
Cycle through a world of majestic mountains and romantic valleys along the wild river Enns (“Ennsradweg”) in the Kalkalpen National Park region. It’s a tour for the fit and outdoorsy. You should absolutely stay in the lovely city of Steyr for a couple of days! The cycle path ends in the historic town of Enns. A family-friendly cycle route takes you along the river Steyr (“Steyrtalradweg”), from the holiday destination “Pyhrn-Priel” to the city of Steyr.
Following Paths Steeped in History
Traces of the Roman Empire and Cultural Heritage in the Bohemian Forest
Cyclists who are passionate about culture and history will find very special hidden gems in Upper Austria. Discover traces of the Roman Empire along the cycle path “Römerradweg” from Passau to Enns. You’ll pass some of the most beautiful spots in the Innviertel-Hausruckwald region and stop by picturesque Lake Attersee until you reach the historic town of Enns in the Zentralraum region. Take a well-deserved rest in Austria’s oldest town with its landmark, the belfry. It’s fascinating to see 2,000 year-old traces of the Roman Empire along the way. Since there’s hardly any elevation gain, the cycle route is ideal for a day trip with children.
The family-friendly cycle route along the “Schwarzenbergischer Schwemmkanal” takes you through the Bohemian Forest in the Mühlviertel region. This artificial channel used to connect the Vltava river in Czech Republic with the river Große Mühl and, subsequently, the Danube. It was used to drive logs from the Bohemian Forest to the Danube. A technical masterpiece built in 1789!
