Walk in the winter wonderland or go snowshoeing next to the lakes and across the rolling hills. There’s no better way to slow down and relax. Find cross-country ski trails and outdoor ice rinks for a fun-filled day with the whole family in the villages Obertrum, Straßwalchen, Köstendorf, Mattsee and Schleedorf.
Salzburg, the city of Mozart, and its cultural treasures are only a 20 minutes’ drive from there. You should absolutely go there, also in winter!
Summer Holidays in the Salzburg Lake District
Beautiful Landscapes and a Close Connection to Nature
As the name of the region suggests, the Salzburg Lake District is home to four idyllic lakes with water that’s safe to drink and plenty of water sports. Board a local cruise ship, take a sailing class or relax in one of the public pools at the shores of the lakes Mattsee, Grabensee, Obertrumer See and Wallersee.
Apart from the lakes, the rolling hills are characteristic of the Salzburg Lake District, making it a paradise for cyclists. From April to October, road cyclists and recreational cyclists find the ideal conditions for exploring the region on two wheels - from the Salzburg Lake District to the Salzkammergut region or to Bavaria, right across the German border.
The Salzburg Lake District is part of the “Bio-Heu-Region”, a region producing organic hay from the meadows. An abundance of herbs used for medicinal and culinary purposes grows here. Join a guided herb walk or look for these treasures yourself. Your hosts on the farm will be happy to give away an old family recipe or two.

1. Join a Scenic Lake Cruise
The boats of the local company “Seenland Schifffahrt” will take you on a scenic cruise around the lakes. Soak up the beauty of the scenery from the water.
The large wooden boat “Seenland” is 12m in length, accommodates up to 50 people and is powered by two electric motors.
By the way, the “Seenland” is the only boat in Austria that sails over two lakes: Lake Mattsee and Lake Obertrumer See. Going from one lake to the other via the bridge “Johannisbrücke”, the boat has to lower its roof hydraulically to pass under the bridge. Mind your head!
2. Go to the “Devil’s Gorge” in Seeham
The “devil’s gorge” or “Teufelsgraben” in Seeham is a popular recreational area for locals and guests alike. In summer, there’s a guided walk featuring myths and legends once a week.
Walking from one end of the gorge to the other (2.5km) takes 2 hours. Of course, you can also go there without a guide, at any time. The nature trail with 17 information boards is especially great on a hot summer’s day or for a family outing with small kids in autumn.
On the way through the romantic gorge, you’ll pass the waterfall “Wildkar-Wasserfall” and a mill which produces real marbles up to this day.
3. Get a Glimpse of the Universe at the Observatory “VEGA”
Since 2018, the public observatory “VEGA” on the mountain Haunsberg in Obertrum aims to spread the passion about astronomy and space exploration and inspire as many people as possible.
Two powerful reflecting telescopes and visitor areas on the roof await all those who’d like to take a closer look at the universe.
Highlight: Every Monday, you can join a guided “star tour” which includes a tour of the observatory, a short lecture and a glimpse of the universe through the telescope.
