Winemaker for a Day
Peek over the Winegrower’s Shoulder
Wine is more than a delicious drink - wine is an art. Go and ask “your” winegrowers, your hosts, and they will also tell you that winegrowers live in harmony with nature and the seasons of the year. They dedicate their lives to the product they create.
Wine Is More than a Drink
For winegrowers, every season of the year might give rise to a challenge. Is summer extremely dry this year? Spring extraordinarily rainy? How many days below zero will we have this winter? Can we expect a thunderstorm? When? How many hours do the vineyards and grapes bask in sunshine?
In the end, all of these factors determine the quality of the wine. Burgenland is on the sunny side of life thanks to the mild, Pannonian climate. That’s not only great for guests enjoying a vineyard stay here, but also for the grapes. There’s hardly a better place for them to thrive than the region surrounding Lake Neusiedl. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the locals are very passionate about viticulture here.
Discover Traditional Knowledge
Join a private tour with the winegrowers and get inspired. It’s their great pleasure to show you the cellars and vineyards and to tell you more about the art of winemaking. A wine tasting should definitely be part of your holiday. Learn more about the distinct qualities that are characteristics of an excellent wine. Winemaking is a process that has been perfected by Mother Nature. But it also requires traditional knowledge that is combined with recent findings and, first and foremost, the winegrowers’ tireless effort and commitment. They are deeply rooted in nature and know it in all of its facets.
The winegrowers can rely on their vast knowledge. They know about the right tasks at the right time and feel what their vineyard needs in order to ensure a good vintage. Be their guest and get familiar with this fascinating process!
A Fascinating History
Burgenland is famous for its picturesque “cellar lanes” (“Kellergassen”). Wine used to be produced and stored close to the vineyards in these historical buildings. Get to know the interesting history of these lovely places! It’s not until the nouveau wines are tasted, that one can tell if this year’s vintage will be classic or extraordinarily good.
The annual grape harvest is the busiest time of the year. Festivals and events keep the tradition and anticipation in full bloom. An unforgettable experience for everyone who’s been part of it! Every move is the right move. Every worker knows what needs to be done. Some of them cut whole bunches of grapes and place them in collection baskets, others transfer them to the winery for processing. The winegrower him- or herself keeps a careful eye on the crushing and pressing of the grapes. Imagine the feeling of satisfaction and pleasure that comes with eating a hearty snack platter together after the work has been done. It was a collective effort. Every individual is proud of it. And finally, the big moment has come. With great respect, the winegrower takes the first sip of wine ... It’s a miracle, year after year. Poetry in a bottle.
