Hiking in Burgenland
Enjoy the Idyllic, Rolling Countryside and Immerse Yourself in Nature...
Set out on a country walk across the steppic plains of the Pannonian lowlands or a stroll through one of the traditional “cellar lanes” (“Kellergassen”), a hike up to one of the vineyard-covered hills or a themed walk focusing on wine. No matter if you’re making your way through the forest, across the fields or up the hill - in Austria’s sunniest province, you can leave your worries behind and immerse yourself in nature. Multi-day tours, country walks with delightful stops for food lovers, hiking tours crossing the border, pilgrimage routes or leisurely rambles - it’s all there waiting for you. In Burgenland. All year round.
A Landscape of Diversity
A vineyard stay in Burgenland does not only come with fine wines that are waiting to be tasted and interesting facts about viticulture. Amazing hikes and country walks start right from the doorstep. Thanks to its diverse landscapes, Burgenland offers a fantastic array of family-friendly hikes for every level of ability and interest. By the way: Hiking is not only a great leisure activity on the land’s highest mountains. Although, some of the tours to Burgenland’s highest summit, Geschriebenstein, are surprisingly demanding given that it’s only an 884m-peak.
In Burgenland, however, you can also set out on a delightful country walk across the steppic plains or the rolling countryside. Enjoy pristine nature all around, also crossing the border to the neighbouring country Hungary, in the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park. The conservation area around Lake Neusiedl covers more than 300km², a third of which being in Austria.
The reed beds on the lakeshore are a unique habitat for greylag geese and a paradise for migratory birds. Join a tour with a national park ranger who will make you familiar with this extraordinary piece of land! Keen photographers will find spectacular photo opportunities along the way. In summer, there are plenty of opportunities for a swim or a boat ride.
Climb Mountains & Walk on Loop Trails ...
Burgenland is also home to a range of hills: 17 great new hiking trails will take you through the beautiful Leitha Mountains. Walk through forests, explore picturesque vineyards and learn more about viticulture on themed nature trails.
Recommendation for a demanding hiking tour: the loop trail “Geschriebenstein-Runde” (56km) crosses a nature park. Hiking at its best!
The panoramic hiking trail “Naturpark-Panoramawanderweg” is definitely worth a visit! It connects all of the five villages of the nature park “Neusiedlersee-Leithagebirge” - Jois, Winden, Breitenbrunn, Purbach and Donnerskirchen.
Calling all families: An exciting and fun time for kids is guaranteed in the “Kindererlebnis Wald- und Vogelwelt”. The nature trail including a wooden lookout tower will give children and adults more information about bird life and the forest ecosystem. Enjoy a stunning view of Lake Rechnitz (ideal for swimming) from the lofty heights!
And, as you could tell by its name (“castle country”), there are also a lot of castles in Burgenland. Each of them has a unique history and a great many stories to tell.
... or Stroll from One Wine Tavern to the Next
Burgenland is famous for its picturesque “cellar lanes” (“Kellergassen”). Wine used to be produced and stored close to the vineyards in these historical buildings. Get to know the interesting history of these lovely places! Take a stroll and have a look around - perhaps you can spot a stork nest. These majestic white birds have found their favourite summer holiday destination in the town of Rust and its surroundings. They build their nests out of straw on top of the old houses’ chimneys. Who knows? While you’re keeping an eye out for storks, you might also find the perfect wine tavern (“Buschenschank”)... You know, that special one. Once you’ve found it, you’ll return here during your holiday and afterwards. Again and again.
Food lovers will absolutely love Burgenland with its traditional wine taverns called “Heuriger” or “Buschenschank”. Only the best locally grown and tasty products are served here. While you’re out hiking, don’t forget to stop by for a snack. Sample local delicacies such as some fresh bread and lard with cracklings from Mangalitsa hairy pigs or a delicious spread with pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil. A glass of “Spritzer” (white wine mixed with sparkling water) is delightfully refreshing. Cheers! Guests with a sweet tooth will also find what they’re looking for in Burgenland. Our local confectioners are world-renowned for their scrumptious treats. Enjoying culinary delights is the best way to regain your strength and continue a fantastic hike or country walk!
