From the Glacier to the Wine
A one-of-a-kind experience that you can’t make anywhere else but in Styria: hiking “From the Glacier to the Wine” - a multi-day tour that crosses the whole province from the north to the south.
It starts at the foot of the majestic Dachstein glacier, Styria’s highest mountain (2,995 m). The first stage takes you to the mountain hut “Guttenberghaus” perched high above the village of Ramsau. Here, the trail continues in two different directions. You can choose between the “Northern Route”, a 546-kilometre tour to Bad Radkersburg (35 stages), and the “Southern Route”, a 377-kilometre tour to Leibnitz (25 stages).
Starting at the Dachstein, the Northern Route takes you across the mountain ranges Gesäuse, Hochschwab and Rax. It traverses the Fischbach Alps and the nature park “Almenland” east of Graz. Further in the south, you’ll walk across the rolling countryside that’s typical for Eastern Styria and Styria’s Spa region until you finally reach the end of the trail in Bad Radkersburg. Allow your muscles to relax in the healing waters of the spa in town.
Starting at the Dachstein as well, the Southern Route takes you across the Schladming Tauern to the village of Krakau and continues via the town of Murau to the nature park “Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen”. From there, you’ll traverse the mountain passes Pack and Koralpe, entering the wine region “Schilcherland” and, later on, the nature park “Südsteiermark” (Southern Styria). Our recommendation: book a room in one of our vineyards. Arrive, enjoy a glass of wine and soak up the beautiful scenery.
Long-Distance Hiking Trails in Styria
The Austrian Alpine Club maintains ten long-distance hiking trails throughout the country. And eight of them take you through some of the very best landscapes in Styria! All of them are 300+ kilometres in length and cross at least three Austrian provinces.
Since these trails used to be trade routes, you can follow in the footsteps of merchants and traders. Today, these multi-day tours are ideal if you’d like to get away from the daily hassles, leave all your worries behind and find yourself again.
Pilgrimage Routes in Styria
Mariazell is Styria’s most popular place of pilgrimage. The chapel holds an 850-year-old image of the Virgin Mary - the “Magna Mater Austriae” - a tall statuette made of linden.
Pilgrimage routes from all points of the compass lead to the village of Mariazell. Amongst others, the trails start in Vienna, Linz, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Graz and Eisenstadt, thus connecting the capitals of the Austrian provinces with this place of pilgrimage.
Other pilgrimage routes in Styria:
- “Hemma Pilgerweg” (“Way of St Hemma”) connecting the two Benedictine monasteries in Admont (Styria) and Gurk (Carinthia)
- “Benediktweg” (“Way of St Benedict”) leading from Upper Austria via the towns of Admont and Seckau to Carinthia and Slovenia
- “Way of St James in Western Styria” is part of Europe’s most popular pilgrimage route
Mountain Cabins and Chalets in Styria
You should always take a break when you’re out hiking. The staffed mountain cabins along the way are inviting places to have a rest. Enjoy home-made butter and cheese that are produced here and take a sip of fresh milk from the cows that graze on the alpine pastures.
If you choose to spend a self-catering holiday in one of our mountain cabins, you’re surrounded by nothing else but nature. There’s no better place for nature lovers, hikers and mountaineers. Look down at the valley or up at the mountains and set out.
